Tail-Light Wish
I stirred the potion under the moon's cold glass, A wish of salt and silver, bubbling past. I drank it down, and felt my legs unwind, Their bones dissolve like sugar, soft and kind. The ocean hummed a welcome in my ear, And scales bloomed bright as coins on the sea floor's mere. Now my tail flicks toward the surface's fading light, A ribbon of gold slipping out of sight. I long for the warm of the sun-touched air, But the deep has pulled me gently everywhere. So I rise and sink in a shimmering dance, With one last glance at the world's dimming expanse.
Salt and Silver Regret
I brewed the potion under a moon of pearl, stirring kelp and starlight in a copper bowl, and drank it down to taste the tide. Now scales bloom cold across my hips, and fins unfold like folded silk, and the sea sings in a language I once knew. I wished for depths, for waves, for wonder, for secrets whispered in the coral's throat, but no one told me the shore would fade like a face I had forgotten how to hold. So here I drift, both glad and grieving, where longing swims beside the light, and every bright new wonder is shadowed by the land I left behind.
The Name the Sea Keeps
I drank the silver potion down, and felt my legs begin to fold. The moonlit tide began to drown the life I'd lived, the story told. My mother called me once, I'm sure, but sound now slips through foam and foam, and all the letters I once knew are scattered like a pearl-strung loam. I reach to catch the name I bore, the syllables my father sang, but waves erase it, one by one, until the silence is the only sound I've known. Now fins where feet had carried me, and scales that catch the dying light. I am the sea's, and let it be, while something human fades from sight.
