The Suspicious Slice
Mom baked a cake, all frosting and cheer, A masterpiece waiting for candles to appear. She turned to the kitchen to fetch the cream, And came back to find a crime scene, a dream. One slice was gone, a canyon of sponge, With a crumb trail leading straight to the lounge. The fork was licked clean, the plate looked too bright, And a dab of icing graced the cat's white sight. We gathered around with our faces well-straight, Asking, "Who snuck that giant slice on the plate?" My brother shrugged, my sister said, "Not me!" But her lips were still frosted, as bright as could be. Mom squinted her eyes, then sighed with a grin, "Well, I guess the birthday cake's got a sneak thief within." So we sang and we cheered, and we cut what was left, While the thief, with a smirk, quietly crumbs cleft.
The Midnight Mustache
I crept downstairs at half past one, With stealth that would make a ninja run, I tiptoed past the sleeping hall, To raid the fridge and feast on all. I grabbed the cream, I grabbed a spoon, I sang a quiet, sneaky tune, No light was on, no creak was heard, I'd won, I thought, without a word. But when I climbed the stairs to bed, I caught my face in mirror's thread, A snowy mustache, thick and white, Gleamed proudly in the glass's light. My brother woke and rubbed his eyes, He saw the cream and shook with cries, "You sneaky thief, I'll tell on you!" He grinned, his own mustache too.
Crumb Trail Confession
I swore the pie was never touched, I wiped my fingers, straight and clean, I hid the fork, I shut the door, I told the cat that she had been. But crumbs are tattletales, I learned, They cling to lips and shirt and sleeve, A golden trail from fridge to couch, A sugary map that won't deceive. My mother lifted up her brow, The lattice sagged, a gaping hole, And there I stood with flaky guilt, A pastry thief with fessing soul. So next time I will eat with care, I'll brush my shirt, I'll check the floor, But crumbs will always spill the beans, And pie will always catch me more.
