Batter Up, Recipe Ruined
My cookbook sat open, the pages so proud,
When I flipped it too quickly, the whisk flew out loud.
A splash of thick batter went flying with glee,
Right across Grandma's recipe for apple-glazed tea.
The ink ran like rivers, the measurements blurred,
Now "two cups of flour" looks like something I've stirred.
I squinted and scowled at the goo on the page,
Is that "half a teaspoon" or a sticky-fingered sage?
So I cooked from my memory, bold and unbowed,
And produced seven pancakes that were lumpy and browned.
The dog gave a sniff, then a happy, soft bark,
And licked up the evidence, leaving no mark.
Now the book's on the shelf with its crinkled, sweet stain,
A stamp of my kitchen, a souvenir of pain.
And every time I bake, I'll remember with cheer,
That a little batter splash makes the recipe mine, dear.
The Mitt That Met Its Match
I reached inside to fetch the pie,
My trusty mitt held firm and high,
But sniffing smoke, I glanced below
And saw my mitt aglow, aglow!
A flicker danced along its seam,
A sudden blaze, a sizzling scream,
I flung it wide and stomped with glee,
While dinner watched in mild dismay for me.
The pie came out, a crispy crown,
The mitt a charcoal, smoking frown,
So here's my tip, dear cooks, take heed:
Keep mitts away from flames indeed!
The Flour Cloud Incident
I opened the bag with a hopeful swing,
A snowy burst took off like a thing.
It billowed and danced through the kitchen air,
Then settled on Whiskers, who wasn't aware.
He sat by the counter, all dignified grace,
A furry statue with a powdered face.
His whiskers were white, his nose was too,
He looked like a ghost who had nowhere to go.
He sneezed once, twice, then shook with disdain,
Sending a second, smaller white rain.
I laughed till I cried, and he gave me a glare,
As if I'd planned this whole flour affair.
So now every baking day we're a pair,
He waits for the bag and I brace for the air.
