Hands Passing Fire
No banner flies above the square,
no drum announces what we dare.
Yet something moves from palm to palm,
a whispered word, a hidden psalm.
A note slipped folded in a sleeve,
a glance that says, "Don't yet believe
that silence is the final sound,
for we are still on common ground."
So pass it on, the fire small,
shielded close beneath the shawl.
One spark is quiet, one is slight,
but sparks, once shared, will ignite the night.
The Lantern Hand
She knelt beside the sleeping child
and pressed a warm hand to his chest,
saying, 'The world will ask you to bow,
but keep your spine like a rising wind.'
She taught him the words the walls forbade,
hummed them low through the bitter nights,
and sewed a flame of stubborn thread
into the lining of his coat.
'When they lock the gate,' she whispered,
'find the crack where the morning enters.
When they say your voice is nothing,
sing until the stones begin to listen.'
He grew with her fierce, quiet lessons,
his fear unfolding into fire,
and when at last he stood against the storm,
he carried her spark in his unbroken eyes.
Lantern in the Alley
Where the streetlamps died and shadows pooled,
where footsteps hushed and doorways drooled with dread,
a single flame was cupped in trembling hands,
and shadows learned the shape of what they fear.
No banner waved, no anthem rose,
just one small light against the bitter night,
but darkness, used to unchallenged reign,
began to flinch beneath its quiet glow.
They came with whispers, come to snuff it out,
with boots and breath and rumors sharp as wire,
yet still the lantern held its patient gold,
for sparks grow bold when others feel the fire.
So light your lantern in the darkest alley,
let every window see the path it shows,
for courage rarely shouts across the valley,
it flickers first, then teaches others how to glow.
