The Chair by the Window
The chair still waits beside the glass, its cushion pressed with an old, faded shape. The morning light comes in and lingers, but no one comes to take their place. I dust it softly, every week, as if the hands I knew might return, as if the door might ease its hinges and a familiar voice might learn to call my name across the room. The kettle sings, the hours pass, and still the empty seat looks out at roads that bend away like glass. So tell me, is it foolish, love, to keep a place for one who's gone? Or is it simply that I wait to learn if I still belong at dawn?
Behind Closed Doors
I hear the laughter spill along the hall, A bright, warm sound that somehow isn't mine. I stand with empty hands outside the wall, And wonder if I've lost my place in line. The door is shut, the lamplight glows inside, Their voices weave a tune I used to know. I tell myself it's only pride I hide, But ache is what I carry, sad and slow. Was there a moment I was left behind? A plan I never heard, a note unsent? The silence clings to questions in my mind, And fills the space where I once felt content. Yet still I linger, listening a while, Unsure if I should knock or turn away. Perhaps the room would open with a smile, If I had courage enough to stay.
The Hook
Beside the door, a small brass ring, Where keys once swung in cheerful sway, Now hangs bare, a silent thing, And waits for someone to find its way. I counted footsteps, leaving, coming, And heard the jingle, quick and bright, But now the hallway's dusk is humming, And no one lifts me to the light. So do I ask, with quiet ache, Am I still wanted, still held dear? Or am I just a thing to take And leave behind when no one's near? The hook holds steady, patient, mute, As if it knows what I have learned: Some hands forget the way they used to route, And some hearts wait for what they've burned.
