The Watchful Door
Each dusk she trots to the farmhouse step, her coat of soot and snow aligned with care. The fence has long since learned her rhythm, the gate forgets its latch when she is there. The sheep have wandered home without a word; the barn lamp hums its amber, patient song. She does not sleep, though she is tired, her ears held high to catch the path along. When boots at last come crunching up the lane, her tail begins its hopeful, steady sweep. She rises, bows, and leads the way inside, the loyal guardian of the hearth's keep.
The Whistle's Command
Across the hills at break of day, I wait for the whistle's call, My eyes fixed firm, my body tensed, The sheep, my wards, beyond the wall. One note sends me to the left, A sharper trill turns me right, I read the flock as lines of thought, And bend the meadow to the light. The farmer sleeps, the hills stay still, But I am wide awake and true, Each whistle is a word of purpose, And every word means work to do. When dusk comes soft and sheep are penned, I lie beside the gate and sigh, The silence hums with easy rest, Until the morning whistle's cry.
Autumn's Runner
Muddy paws race through autumn fields, A border collie, wild and free, Where golden leaves in swirls unyield To wind that sings of falling sea. Her eyes fixed sharp on drifting sheep, She weaves through stubble, low and fleet, A shadow sweeping, dark and deep, The rhythm of her paws in beat. Now pause, now bound, now turn once more, With tail held high and breath held tight, Until the flock moves through the door Of dusk, and gold gives way to night.
