The First Ballot
The morning light arrives with a quiet pride,
As I stand in line, my heart open wide.
Today I turn eighteen, a year of new begin,
And for the first time, my voice can enter in.
The paper feels heavy, yet light as a dove,
Each name a promise, each choice a token of love
For the country that raised me, the streets I call home,
And the future my vote will help to comb.
I mark the small circle with careful intent,
No whisper of doubt, no part of my bent,
For birthdays are gifts, but this one holds more,
A seat at the table, a hand at the door.
So here's to the candles, the cake and the cheer,
And here's to the ballot that makes this year clear.
Eighteen and certain, I cast my first name,
A citizen's birthday, a part of the same flame.
Two Tables, One Cake
The ballot slid in, a quiet vow,
then down the hall the candles glow.
A paper stub, a slice of cake,
we share the day for each small sake.
At school the voters lined the wall,
their pencils scratched, their duty small,
and just across the gym's bright door
the balloons bobbed and the children roared.
One frosted square, one civic hand,
the democratic and the sweet, both planned.
We cut the cake with polling care,
and every guest gets equal share.
So here's to chocolate, here's to choice,
to birthday wishes and the single voice.
The ink is dry, the frosting's bright,
and all of us, together, feel the light.
Ballot Candles
Another year has folded in,
like a ballot dropped with care,
and every candle that you blow
is a vote you cast for air.
So lift your voice, let laughter ring,
and mark your name with pride,
for you are one of many hands
that keep this country wide.
Take a sticker, press it proud,
a seal of freedom bright,
the flag that flutters on your card
is shining, Happy Birthday, light!
May every wish you make today
be one the future heeds,
and may your years be filled with truth,
with courage, and with deeds.
