What the Frost Keeps
Beneath the crust of frozen ground,
the roots hold still and do not drown
in grief, nor break beneath the weight
of winter's long and silent gate.
They do not weep for summer's green,
nor mourn the leaves that once were seen.
They gather what the cold has left
and hold it close, of hope bereft.
The frost may bite, the wind may wail,
but hidden strength will never fail.
What looks like death is only sleep,
and roots keep watch while secrets keep.
So when your losses bury you,
remember what the roots still do:
they wait, they hold, they grow in dark,
and spring will find the living mark.
Seeds of Tomorrow
The night took more than I could name,
A silence settled, heavy, still,
I wept until the morning came,
And felt each drop run down, until
The ground beneath my grief grew soft.
No bloom appears in drought or shade,
Yet every tear that hit the soil
Has coaxed a root where hope had frayed,
And in the dark, a green shoot stirred,
A promise pressing toward the light.
So let the sorrow fall like rain;
I am the earth that holds the seed,
And from my loss, I will sustain
A garden where new life can breed.
Tomorrow rises from my pain.
Still Standing
The snow came down like a thundering sigh,
and swept the valley clean of all it knew.
Trees were bent and cradled, lost from the sky,
and homes went silent, the way the wind blew.
Yet the mountain did not fall to its knees,
it held its shoulders steady through the night.
It let the scars ride down its ancient ease,
and kept its peaks against the paling light.
Now the meadows whisper green again,
and streams sing softly through the broken stone.
The mountain wears its wounds like a crown of rain,
proof that strength is what the storm has grown.
