Bare Evergreen
Against the frosted pane it stands,
A plain green shape with nothing bright,
No tinsel drape, no painted hands,
Just needles holding winter's light.
The snow beyond is soft and deep,
And still the window, cold and clear,
Frames the tree in quiet sleep,
A silent, dark, unchanging year.
No colored lamps to bless its boughs,
No gilded star to crown its crest,
Yet in its stillness, something allows
The plainest season its own rest.
Untrimmed Boughs
No tinsel glints upon the limbs,
no ribbon ties the branches down;
the fir stands bare of borrowed gleams,
its needles dusted, cold, and brown.
It breathes the winter, sharp and clean,
where snow sifts through its open arms,
and every bough, unshaped, unseen,
holds only frost and quiet charms.
No star has crowned its ragged height,
no lights have strung its patient frame;
yet in the hush of falling white,
it keeps the evergreen's own flame.
The Bare Fir
No tinsel drapes my needled arms,
no glass orbs chime upon my boughs;
I stand in winter's open calm,
with nothing but my green to vow.
The snow still settles, soft and white,
upon the branches, lean and bare,
and every sprig, in fading light,
holds up its scent like scented prayer.
They say a tree must wear its gold
to be a feast for passing eyes,
but I have learned to hold
the quiet of unlit skies.
So let the children pass me by,
let candles stay in their wooden box;
I feel the stars without a tie
and bloom in my unlit, humble locks.
