Tomorrow's Door
I set the day aside for you,
but silence filled the empty room.
The clock ticked on, the light turned blue,
and every hour bloomed with gloom.
I traced your name upon the glass,
then watched the words grow thin and gray.
Each moment passed, let slip, let pass,
while I just waited, lost, astray.
But night will fold its quiet wings,
and dawn will paint the sky anew.
I'll carry all the hopeful things
and hold the morning close to you.
So here I leave the door ajar,
though today I missed you so.
Tomorrow, shining like a star,
will bring you back, and let you go, no, stay, and glow.
Your Scent on My Sweater
I pulled your sweater from the chair,
and breathed in cedar, rain, and you.
The sleeves still hold the shape of care,
the way you wore it, warm and true.
Today I missed the sound of you,
the laugh that rose before the door,
the quiet hum of morning brew,
the hand that found mine on the floor.
So here I stay, my face pressed low,
where threads still hold your gentle trace,
and though the hours are far to go,
your scent holds space in its embrace.
The Warm Mug
Your mug still holds a ghost of heat,
A ring of brown where your lips once met the rim.
I pour the morning, pour it slow,
And sit where you should be, the chair too wide.
The kettle sighs, the window hums,
The toast goes cold on a plate for two.
I lift your cup, I hold it near,
As if the warmth could find its way back to you.
So here I wait, a steaming pause,
Between the sip and the empty chair,
And every quiet hour I miss you more,
Than coffee ever cared to share.
