The Hum of Waiting
The phone sits silent on the table,
its screen as dark as a sleeping lake.
I check it once, then check it again,
though nothing has changed since I last looked.
The room is still, the clock ticks slow,
and every creak becomes your voice.
I hear the wind and think it's you,
I hear a car and hold my breath.
Silence hums louder than any ringtone,
a note held long, a song of nerves.
It fills the space between two hearts,
where words have not yet found their way.
So I wait, my fingers resting near,
the quiet ringing, sharp and clear,
and in its hum I learn to hear
the distance shrink, the moment near.
Waiting by the Kettle
The kettle sighs its last bright steam,
and still the phone sits silent, cold.
I pace the rooms, a restless dream,
while tea forgets to be consoled.
Each step I take wears a small groove,
the clock hands crawl, the hours bend.
I glance at screens that will not move,
and wonder if you'll call, my friend.
The cup grows cool beside the sill,
the light slants gold across the floor.
I tell myself, "Be patient, still,"
and listen for the ringing door.
Yet every creak becomes your voice,
every shadow, every sound.
I wait, and hope, and make my choice
to keep on pacing, lost and bound.
The Silent Telephone
The phone sits still upon the table,
its face turned up, its wire coiled tight.
I dust the room, I make the bed,
but every sound I hear is nearly right.
A car goes by, a door swings wide,
a bird calls out beyond the glass;
each time my heart leaps up to meet
the ring that never comes to pass.
I know you'll call, I tell myself,
but hours stretch like thread unspun,
and waiting turns into a hush,
a tender ache, a quiet ache, begun.
