Behind the Rim
Each morning, steam curls up between us,
A soft veil over the thing I cannot say.
I lift my cup and hide a grin,
While you laugh at something I did not hear.
Your eyes find mine across the table,
Quick as a sparrow, then gone again.
I blow on my coffee, pretending it's hot,
When really it's the warmth of you that has me flushed.
No one sees the secret that I keep,
Not the barista, not the clock on the wall.
Just the mug, the morning light,
And the smile I tuck behind the rim.
Cool as Stone
I nod to you across the hall,
as though your name means nothing at all.
I speak of weather, trains, and tea,
and guard the flame you cannot see.
You laugh, and I just shrug and turn,
the way a candle learns to burn
in silence, folded out of sight,
while I pretend the dark is light.
They ask me, "Do you like her? Well?"
I say, "She's fine," and let it fell,
but every night I trace your face
and lose the calm I took such pace to keep.
So here I stand, composed and dry,
with all my longing hid inside,
a quiet fire no one will guess,
beneath my careless, cool address.
The Locket I Never Opened
I keep my love folded small,
A letter sealed with careful thread,
Tucked beneath the ribs where no one looks,
Beating softly, never said.
Across the room you laugh and turn,
And still I smile as if I'm fine,
While every glance I cannot hold
Becomes a word I won't let shine.
I guard it like a candle flame
Cupped in palms against the wind,
A warmth that lives in quiet hours
Where no one knows it, none but I've sinned.
So let my secret rest in me,
A locket closed, a lamp turned low,
Loved in silence, safe and whole,
The truest love is the one I don't show.
