Crackers and Cold Truce
We gathered round the tinsel-draped table, the same two rivals who'd fought all year, her spreadsheets smug, my memos cold, and the paper crowns sat crooked on our hair. The turkey steamed, the cracker snapped, a joke fell flat, then something warmed, she passed the gravy without a word, and I, for once, forgot the reports we'd stormed. We raised our glasses, sparkling, thin, "To the quarterly targets," she said with a grin, "And to the peace we never planned," I answered, clinking glass to hers, unplanned.
Gravy on Gingham Joy
We raised our glasses, cracked our jokes, the tinsel swayed, the carols played, when Dave leaned in to pass the rolls and tipped the boat of gravy's shade. It slid across his jolly knit, a reindeer's nose now brown with cheer, and one bright bead of amber sat right where the sleigh bells hung this year. We gasped, then laughed, then dabbed with napkins, while Maria offered club soda's fizz, and someone swore the stain looked festive, a holly sprig of savory quiz. So here's to sweaters, spills, and cheer, to colleagues brave enough to share. May every stain we wear this season be proof we showed up, and we cared.
Crackers and Silence
The turkey's dry, the tinsel's bright, We clink our glasses, sing, and recite The jokes from paper crowns we wear, While Gary laughs a little too much there. Then envelopes slide across the cloth, A stack of bills, all pale and wroth. No one reaches out, no one speaks, Each eye slides off to the candle's cheeks. We study cranberry, study the wine, Study the carols on the speaker's line, As if the mince pie holds the year's whole sum, And no one here has a debt to come. So Merry Christmas, colleagues dear, We'll all be pretending for another year.
