Solitary Song
Upon the bare and winter bough,
A lonely robin lifts its voice,
Its notes drift out through hushed cold air,
And no one answers, no one needs to.
The frost has silvered every twig,
The sky is pale, the day grows thin,
Yet still it sings, as if to say
That hope can live where all have been.
I listen from my window's pane,
And feel a kinship in its song,
For even in the emptiest hours,
Some heart still rises, clear and strong.
Hunger in the Nest
Before the dawn has lit the eaves,
she leaves the nest of mossy thread,
and tugs a worm from wet green leaves
to feed the chicks who wait in bed.
Their beaks flung wide like scarlet cups,
they cry for every bite she brings,
and she returns with tireless hops
and drops the morsel on their wings.
She gives them all her steady care,
her wings a shelter, warm and near,
until the nest can hold no more,
and they are ready to soar and to hear.
Frost and Feathered Hop
Across the lawn, the silver frost lies thin,
Where robins hop with rusty breasts aglow.
Each step they take leaves tiny prints within
The glittering white, a trail of dark and snow.
They pause, they tilt their heads, they listen well,
For worms that stir beneath the hardened ground.
The winter sun climbs slowly, sure and swell,
And melts the crystal shimmer all around.
So robins keep their patient, cheerful way,
Across the frozen grass at break of day.
