Each Morning, Again
The alarm goes off and the day is gray,
yet I turn to you and choose you anyway.
Not for the tenderness of an easy June,
but for the quiet work of choosing you through the noon.
We have bruised each other with our careless words,
and still I rise and hear the bird-song's chords.
Love is not a feeling that waits to be found,
it is a hand I lift from the ground.
So here I am, with sleep still in my hair,
reaching for the warmth that is always there.
I choose the coffee, the cracked old mug,
the small domestic miracle of your hug.
When storms arrive and the roof begins to leak,
I will choose you in the quiet, when the thunder's weak.
And every dawn that breaks upon our door,
I will choose you once again, and then once more.
Two Hearts, One Rhythm
Through storms that rattled every door,
Through years that asked us to be more,
I chose you, and I chose you still,
Beneath the weight of wind and will.
The world may shift, the seasons turn,
The candles gutter, embers burn,
But in the quiet of our room
Your heartbeat answers mine in bloom.
No fortune's coin, no fickle tide,
No gilded path could draw me aside;
I found in you a steady flame,
And every day I'd choose the same.
So let the clock keep ticking on,
Our faithful hearts, though two, are one,
Beating in unison, soft and true,
A rhythm born of me and you.
The Harder Seasons
When winter bites and the roads run cold,
and the lamps we lit have burned to gold,
I still reach out and find your hand,
the same warm truth we always planned.
The storms will come, they always do,
they test the roots of all we grew,
but love that's chosen, day by day,
never learns to fade away.
So let the years press hard and long,
let doubt grow loud and fear grow strong,
we'll weather every cutting gale,
still choosing each other through the veil.
For bonds are forged when skies turn gray,
and hard seasons only light the way,
and I will choose you, come what may,
through every harvest, every frost, and every stormy day.
