Sheet Happens
The doorbell rang, my heart went thump, I glanced around at the mess and slump: Socks on the lamp, a pizza box throne, A laundry mountain I'd call my own. So quick, I grabbed my bedsheet bright, And tossed it over the chaos tight. Now sofa, sink, and stacks of books Look like ghosts in a sheety nook. I opened up with a cheerful grin, As my guest stepped in with a wary chin. "Oh, what's that lump?" they asked with a squint, "Just modern art," I said, not a hint. They sat down slow on a rolling mound, And squeaked a toy that hid underground. I served them tea in a mug, bare-faced, While the cat was napping in the cookie case. So if you visit and see a hill, Don't ask me questions, I'll stay still. It's just my hidden, cozy plan, A sheet-draped mess, the house-tidying fan.
Mud on the Welcome Mat
The doorbell rang, I flung it wide, A guest in coat, with cheer and pride. But Rover bounded, tail aloft, And sprinted out through mud so soft. He leapt with joy, his paws ablaze With swamp-brown prints in muddy haze. Up came the sleeves, the hems, the knees, A dappled hug from fur-face pleas. My guest stood frozen, shirt now art, A map of paws across the heart. I cried, "Oh dear, he's just so glad!" The guest just laughed, "Well, I'm not mad!"
Extra Cheese, Extra Guest
I ordered a pie with pepperoni, not a plus-one, But the driver came in, and he's staying for fun. He kicked off his sneakers and claimed my best chair, And asked for a fork, then dug in with a flair. He praised my decor and critiqued my cold tea, Then asked if I'd mind if he phoned his mom, Lee. He found the last slice I had saved for the morning, And gave it a bite with a satisfied yawning. Now he's wearing my robe and reclining on the couch, He's rated my movies and tapped on my pouch. I tipped him a dollar, a ten, and a smile, But he's still here, insisting he'll stay for a while.
